The Honorable Patty Murray Dear Senator Murray, I'm really angry and frustrated by the recent passage of a bill by the Senate and House onto which U.S. Representative Nathan Deal tacked an exemption to the 100 percent certified organic feed standard required of producers who are certified organic by the USDA's National Organic Food Program. As a consumer of organic foods, I am disgusted by this blatant and underhanded attempt to dilute the integrity of the USDA organic food standard. These continued attempts by agribusiness to weaken organic standards are abhorrent and must be stopped. As you know, this is not the first time conventional producers have tried to sidestep or adulterate the law in a furtive manner. It is vital to me that I know the food I buy is truly 100 percent organic. Although I don't purchase or consume meat, poultry or fish myself (nor do I support the use of any meats by others), I do use some dairy and eggs. And I don't support the growing of grains for ANY purpose (animal feed, people feed or otherwise) in a conventional, chemically-intensive manner. Nor do I support the watering-down of the USDA Organic Foods Program in ANY manner or for ANY purpose (most especially when the purpose is to support agribusiness in increasing profits at the expense of sustainability, environmental integrity, and consumer awareness). I STRONGLY urge you to support the Leahy-Snowe "Organic Restoration Act," a bill that rescinds section 771 of the 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Bill. Thank you!
